From the first time I talked to Jenny over the phone, I knew that her wedding to Chris was going to be one for the books. To start, it was at Wilderness Adventure, a place that is very near and dear to my heart. When I first moved to Virginia, it was for a job as a backpacking trip leader for their year round and summer camp programs. I spent a few years working there in a wide variety of roles before eventually ending up as a photographer in Roanoke. So, needless to say, I have quite a lot of love for their venue, and was very excited to get to know the couple that choose such a unique place for their wedding!
Jenny actually told me that she had stumbled across Wilderness Adventure in a Martha Stewart article, which led me to consult google and find out what on earth Martha knew about an outdoor adventure center/wedding venue in southwest Virginia! The article is titled “18 Summer Camp Wedding Venues for Kicking Back and Getting Hitched,” which is really a very good description for a wedding at Wilderness Adventure! The neatest part of the story, in my opinion, is that Jenny had actually found the article years earlier while researching wedding venues for friends long before she and Chris got engaged. Something about it really captured her interest, and when the time came to plan her own wedding, she knew just what she was looking for!
When I arrived on their wedding day, I was immediately greeted by a group of her guests tubing on the the creek that runs along the property, and then managed to get some photos of other guests riding the zip line before the wedding festivities began - just to give you an idea of what I mean! Jenny got ready in the Main Lodge, the focal point of the property, which is an expansion of the original 1800’s-era farmhouse. There are so many things I could say about being with Jenny & her friends while they were getting ready, but the main thing that stands out is how absolutely fun and enthusiastic they all were. They were also incredible at helping out - anything she needed was immediately taken care of - from steaming the dress (and veil!) to getting a walkie-talkie so Jenny could talk to Chris in a different building.
The wedding ceremony itself was so dreamy and romantic, held under the willow tree by the pond surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. As Jenny explained to me, “It’s like if Jane Austen went camping!” Capping off the evening, the reception was a serious party - complete with countless twinkle lights, killer dance moves, plus a popcorn maker and cigars.
